Practice policies

The agreements that hold the work steady, written plainly rather than buried in small print. We review them together before your first session, and you are welcome to ask about any of them.

The details

Scheduling and cancellation

Sessions are held at a regular weekly time wherever possible, because consistency does a lot of the work in therapy. Individual sessions are 45 minutes and couples sessions are 60 minutes.

Please give 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule. Less than 48 hours notice, or a missed session without notice, is charged at the full session fee. Insurance does not reimburse missed sessions. Let me know as early as you can and we will look for another time in the same week.

Fees and payment

Fees are due at the time of service, and you'll find how payment works laid out on the Rates page. I am an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance directly. On request I provide a monthly superbill, an itemized invoice with everything an insurer needs for out-of-network reimbursement.

Reimbursement is decided by your plan, not by me. I cannot guarantee it, and I am glad to help you ask your insurer the right questions.

Confidentiality

What you say in session stays between us. I do not share information about you, including whether you are a client, without your written permission.

The law requires a few exceptions. I must act if there is a serious risk of harm to you or to someone else, if there is suspected abuse or neglect of a child, an older adult, or a dependent adult, or if a court orders disclosure. Where I can, I will tell you first and involve you in what happens next.

Telehealth

This is a fully virtual practice. Sessions happen by secure video, and I do not keep a physical office. You will need a private space, a reliable connection, and to be physically located in California or Massachusetts at the time of the session, since that is where I am licensed.

We agree on a backup plan at the start of our work, so a dropped connection does not cost us the session. Telehealth is not suitable for every situation, and if a higher level of care would serve you better I will say so and help you find it.

Communication between sessions

Email and the contact form are used for scheduling and practical matters only. Neither is a secure or confidential channel, so please keep clinical detail out of them and bring it to session instead.

Messages are not monitored continuously and are usually answered within a few working days. This is not a route for urgent help.

Records and your rights

I keep brief clinical records, stored securely, as required by law and professional standards. You may request a copy of your record, and we can review it together so it reads as more than paperwork.

You may end therapy at any time. If you do, I will offer a closing session and, if it is useful, referrals to other clinicians.

In a crisis

This website and my inbox are not for emergencies. Call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available twenty four hours a day. Call 911, or go to your nearest emergency department, if you or someone else is in immediate danger.
